LAX - LAWAThe Terminals 4 and 5 Modernization is a $1.6 billion redevelopment program designed to transform one of LAX’s most heavily used areas into a unified, efficient, and modern 30-gate complex. The project will create a centralized headhouse for ticketing, security screening, and baggage claim, along with a direct connection to the airport’s Automated People Mover (APM) system. This work is part of LAX’s larger modernization initiative, preparing the airport for increased passenger volumes ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A significant component of the project is the new Terminal Vertical Core, which will provide escalators, elevators, and an elevated pedestrian walkway linking Terminals 4 and 5 to the APM’s West CTA Station. The Vertical Core will also include office and support spaces for airline operations, TSA, and other airport partners. Its glass curtain wall reflects the mid-century modern architectural language introduced throughout the Central Terminal Area, creating a cohesive visual identity across the airport.
Additional improvements include the construction of a new south concourse within Terminal 4, expanded gate areas with upgraded passenger amenities, and enhancements to the terminal’s power, utilities, aircraft apron, and fueling systems. Two existing gates will be rebuilt to accommodate international arrivals, supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations. The modernization also introduces improved circulation paths, expanded security screening capacity, reconfigured check-in areas, and increased access to natural light within the departure hall to improve energy performance.
The project is targeting LEED Silver certification in alignment with LAWA’s sustainability goals and long-term vision for a more connected, efficient, and passenger-focused LAX.
